According to the ancient legend, Lord Krishna was born to kill Kansa. Kansa used to rule over Mathura. Krishna was given birth by Devaki while in jail. Please tell that Devaki was Kansa's real sister and she married Vasudev. There was an Akashvani that the eighth son of Devaki and Vasudeva would kill Kansa.
After hearing this prophecy, Kansa imprisoned his sister Devaki and Vasudeva and killed all their sons one by one. When their eighth child, Krishna, was born, Vasudeva managed to save the child and handed over Krishna to Nanda and Yashoda in Vrindavan.
When Vasudeva came back, he handed over a girl to Kansa, but when Kansa tried to kill him, the girl took the form of Durga and warned that her death was near. Then years later, Lord Krishna came to Mathura and killed Kansa.
